Ways You Can Do to Prevent Early Puberty

“Preventing early puberty is not always possible. Because, in some cases, the cause of this condition is not clear.”

Ways You Can Do to Prevent Early Puberty

Halodoc, Jakarta – For parents, preventing early puberty in children is very important. This is a condition when the child experiences a growth spurt and develops the sexual physical features of an adult.

This condition is related to the brain, where the hypothalamus releases hormones that trigger the pituitary gland to release gonadotropin hormones. This hormone can stimulate the growth of the sex glands, which in boys are the testes, and in girls are the ovaries.

In boys, the testes release testosterone, while in girls, the ovaries release estrogen. Puberty usually starts between the ages of 8-13 in girls and 9-14 years in boys.

How To Prevent Early Puberty

Children affected by early puberty go through puberty much earlier. Girls develop secondary sexual characteristics, such as breasts, before the age of 8 years. While boys with early puberty experience changes before the age of 9 years.

You can’t prevent some risk factors for early puberty, such as gender and race. However, there are several things you can do to reduce the chances of your child experiencing early puberty, including:

  • Keep the child away from external sources of estrogen and testosterone. Such as prescription drugs for adults or dietary supplements that contain estrogen or testosterone.
  • Encourage children to maintain a healthy weight.

Know the Cause

To prevent early puberty in children, you need to understand what causes it. The brain starts the process with the production of a hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).

When these hormones reach the pituitary gland (a small, bean-shaped gland at the base of the brain), it leads to the production of more hormones in the ovaries for women (estrogen) and testicles for men (testosterone).

Estrogen is involved in the growth and development of female sexual characteristics. While testosterone is responsible for the growth and development of male sexual characteristics.

Why does this process start earlier in some children? This depended on whether they had central precocious puberty or peripheral precocious puberty.

The cause of central precocious puberty is often unclear. The pattern and timing of steps in the process is generally normal. For most children with this condition, there is no underlying medical problem and no clear reason for the early puberty.

In rare cases, some causes of central precocious puberty are:

  • Tumors in the brain or spinal cord (central nervous system).
  • Defects in the brain present at birth, such as excess fluid buildup (hydrocephalus) or noncancerous tumors (hamartomas).
  • Radiation to the brain or spinal cord.
  • Injury to the brain or spinal cord.
  • Hypothyroidism.

Meanwhile, to prevent early puberty of the peripheral precocious type, you also need to know the cause. This condition occurs due to the presence of estrogen or testosterone in the child’s body.

This type of puberty occurs without the involvement of hormones in the brain (GnRH). Instead, the cause is the release of estrogen or testosterone into the body due to problems with the ovaries, testicles, adrenal glands, or pituitary gland.

In both girls and boys, the following can cause peripheral precocious puberty:

  • Tumors in the adrenal glands or in the pituitary gland that release estrogen or testosterone.
  • McCune-Albright syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the color of the skin and bones and causes hormonal problems.
  • Exposure to external sources of estrogen or testosterone, such as creams or ointments.
