Halodoc, Jakarta – Emotions are often interpreted as something that has a negative meaning. Because, you may be used to seeing someone show their emotions when they are angry, sad, or disappointed. However, did you know that emotions are more than just negative feelings?

In relation to psychology or psychology, emotion is a pattern of reactions that are complex and involve various aspects, ranging from physiology, behavior, and experience used to solve a problem. More simply, emotion is a form of response to the events that you experience.

How Emotions Work

So how do emotions work? In the brain, there are many systems with their respective tasks. One of them is the limbic system, which is responsible for regulating one’s memory, behavior, and emotions. Of all the different types of emotions, happiness tends to be the one that a person strives for the most. Happiness has a meaning as a pleasant emotional state that arises with the characteristics of feeling satisfied, happy, happy, and prosperous.

You can see the characteristics of this emotion when people laugh, smile, show relaxed body gestures, and have a cheerful and pleasant tone of voice.

Sadness is another type of emotion that has the meaning of being a temporary emotional state. This type often appears disappointed, sad, hopeless, disinterested, and depressed mood.

Like any other emotion, grief is something that happens to everyone from time to time. In some cases, a person can experience periods of prolonged and severe sadness that can turn into depression. Grief can be expressed in various ways, including:

  • Withdraw from others.

The type and severity of grief can vary depending on the root cause, and the way people deal with those feelings can also vary.

Fear is a strong type of emotion and can play an important role in survival. When faced with danger and feeling frightened, you experience what has become popular as the fight or flight response.

Muscles tense, heart and breathing rates increase, and the mind becomes more alert. Everything prepares the body to run from danger or stand up and fight. Expressions of this type of emotion can include:

  • Facial expressions such as widening the eyes and pulling the chin back.
  • Physiological reactions in the form of rapid breathing and increased heart rate.
  • Body language indicates a readiness to run as soon as possible or hide from a threat.

Of course, not everyone experiences fear in the same way. Some people may be more sensitive to fear and certain situations or objects are more likely to trigger this emotion.

An example of a pleasant surprise is when you arrive home and find that your family has gathered to celebrate your birthday. Surprise is often characterized by:

  • Facial expressions such as raising eyebrows, widening eyes and opening mouth.

However, anger can be a problem if it is excessive or expressed in a way that is unhealthy, harmful, or harmful to others. Uncontrolled anger can quickly turn into aggression, abuse or violence. Usually, this occurs due to lack of sleep, stress and depression, and certain medical conditions.

How to Control Emotions

You certainly need to control negative emotions, so they don’t cause harm to yourself and others. You can try it by doing the following methods.

  • Always think and be positive

Instead, calm yourself by taking a breath and pausing. Think that you can give a more positive response to make things not worse.

  • Do fun activities

All negative things can become more positive if you don’t get caught up in those emotions. Try doing a variety of fun activities, such as reading books, gardening, cooking, shopping, learning new things, or just drinking coffee at your favorite place while listening to music.
