Handling Performed on Extreme OCD

Halodoc, Jakarta – People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have thought patterns and obsessions that lead them to do something repeatedly (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can interfere with daily activities. These mental health disorders can be chronic and even extreme.

What is extreme OCD? When OCD becomes extreme, it interferes with relationships, responsibility, and quality of life and can suffer significantly. It can even prevent the sufferer from carrying out normal daily activities. OCD is not the fault of the sufferer and you don’t have to face it alone. This condition can be treated, although it feels heavy and severe.

Types of Treatment to Treat Extreme OCD

According to research, extreme OCD needs to undergo long-term treatment to minimize recurrence. Treatment must be carried out intensively and early, so that OCD symptoms do not recur even if treatment is stopped.

There are several types of OCD treatment that can be done. The most common treatments are:

1. Treatment

People with OCD may get prescription medications to treat OCD symptoms. Medications used target serotonin, some are also advised to take the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.

In some cases, if a person does not respond to targeted drugs, a combination of several drugs may be used. For example, an SSRI antidepressant may be combined with a drug such as risperidone (which is used to treat psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions).

2. Psychotherapy

The next type of extreme OCD treatment is psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is the most commonly used psychotherapy to treat OCD. The way CBT works is by:

  • Controlling repetitive rituals or behaviors.
  • Reducing anxiety about the obsession, which can reduce intensity and frequency.

CBT for extreme OCD involves two components, namely behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy.

Behavioral therapy is carried out with exposure and prevention rituals (ERP) in the form of:

  • Gradually increase exposure to anxiety or obsession triggers, while resisting the urge to perform the compulsive behavior in response.
  • Repeat the exposure regularly, until the situation or experience of the sufferer no longer triggers anxiety or distress.

Meanwhile, cognitive therapy involves:

  • Helping people with OCD learn to recognize anxiety about what obsessions mean and replace them with realistic ones.
  • Teaches to be more aware that obsession does not hurt anyone and has no power.

3. Anxiety Management

Anxiety symptoms in people with OCD need to be managed with an awareness-based program known as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). You could say this program is still new as a treatment for OCD.

While ACT has not researched as much as CBT, it is seen as promising as a treatment for OCD. Especially if the treatment is combined with CBT. OCD sufferers who do not respond to treatment with the ERP method can benefit from anxiety management.

Anxiety management aims to help people with OCD to perceive anxiety as neutral. The sufferer is also able to let anxiety come and go, without needing to respond, or not being bothered.

Those are several types of OCD treatment. This mental health condition can make it difficult for sufferers to live their daily lives. Especially if the symptoms are extreme. If you have extreme OCD, you may be afraid to manage your symptoms.
