Habits That Increase Lung Cancer Risk

Hellodoc, Jakarta – Lung cancer is a condition when cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the lungs, it is called lung cancer. Lung cancer can spread to lymph nodes or other organs in the body, such as the brain.

Cancer from other organs can also spread to the lungs. When cancer cells spread from one organ to another, this condition is referred to as metastasis. So, are there habits that can increase the risk of lung cancer? Here’s the review!

Things That Increase Lung Cancer Risk

Different cancers have different risk factors. Some risk factors, such as smoking and lifestyle can be changed, but conditions such as age and family history cannot be changed.

The following are habits that can increase the risk of lung cancer:

1. Smoking

By far smoking is the main risk factor for lung cancer. About 80 percent of lung cancer deaths are estimated to be due to smoking and this number may be even higher for small cell lung cancer.

The risk of lung cancer for people who smoke is many times higher than for people who don’t smoke. The longer you smoke and the more cigarettes you smoke, the greater the risk of lung cancer.

2. Exposure to Cigarette Smoke

Even if you don’t smoke, breathing in other people’s smoke can also increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Secondhand smoke is estimated to cause more than 7,000 lung cancer deaths each year.

3. Exposure to Factory Contamination

People who work in factories, mines, textile industries, and shipyards are more likely to develop lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer is much greater in workers exposed to asbestos who also smoke. So far it is not clear how much exposure to asbestos can increase the risk of lung cancer.

It’s just that, if you routinely carry out activities in places prone to such contaminants, it can increase the risk of lung cancer. People who are exposed to large amounts of asbestos also have a greater risk of developing mesothelioma, a type of cancer that begins in the pleura (the lining that surrounds the lungs).

4. Taking Certain Food Supplements

People who smoke and have a habit of taking beta carotene supplements have an increased risk of lung cancer. If you smoke, it is advised not to take beta carotene supplements.

5. Consuming Drinking Water Containing Arsenic

Drinking water is a good thing, but drinking water that contains arsenic can actually be a health problem. Several countries in Southeast Asia and South America have high levels of arsenic in their drinking water, and this can increase the risk of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is usually grouped into two main types called small cell and non-small cell (including adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma). This type of lung cancer grows differently and is treated differently. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common than small cell lung cancer.

Then there is also a pancoast tumor, also known as a superior sulcus tumor, which grows at the top of the lung and disrupts the surrounding structures. These rare tumors can be caused by other conditions such as lymphoma or tuberculosis.

Then there are lung carcinoid tumors which are rare and tend to grow more slowly than other types of lung cancer. Carcinoid is very rare and slow growing and is most often treated with surgery.
