Beware, This Causes Fungal Infections in the Female Genital

Hellodoc, Jakarta – A healthy vagina contains bacteria and some yeast cells. However, when the balance of bacteria and yeast changes, yeast cells can multiply uncontrollably, causing itching, swelling, and irritation.

Vaginal yeast infections are not always caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but sexual contact can increase the risk of transmission. More information about the causes of yeast infections in the female genitalia can be read here!

Causes of Genital Yeast Infection

Balanced yeast growth in the body will not cause infection. However, when yeast is out of balance, it grows quickly and can give a person a yeast infection.

The yeast infection causes burning, itching, redness of the vulva (the outside of the vagina) and a change in vaginal discharge. Well, the following are the causes of fungal infections in the female genitalia:

1. Take Antibiotics

Antibiotics that treat infections in the body can kill the good bacteria in the vagina. Good bacteria keep yeast in check, but when the balance shifts, loss of good bacteria can lead to yeast infections.

2. Pregnancy and Hormones

Anything that interferes with or changes hormones can upset the balance of candida in the vagina. These include getting pregnant, using birth control pills, and normal changes during the menstrual cycle.

3. Having Uncontrolled Diabetes

High blood sugar also affects the bacteria in the urine which in turn triggers a yeast infection.

4. Have a Weak Immune System

Having HIV/AIDS or taking drugs that suppress the immune system also affects the growth of bacteria. Chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer can also suppress the immune system, which can trigger yeast infections.

Handling of Genital Yeast Infections in Women

To reduce the risk of vaginal yeast infection, you can apply a clean lifestyle, especially in the intimate area. Also avoid wearing underwear that is too tight. Some other things that can be applied related to avoiding yeast infections in the genitals are:

  • Avoid douching which can eliminate some of the normal bacteria in the vagina that protect against infection
  • Don’t use scented feminine products, including bubble baths, pads and tampons that contain fragrance.
  • Long soaking in hot tubs and hot springs.
  • Unnecessary use of antibiotics, such as for colds or other viral infections.
  • Avoid wearing wet clothes, such as swimwear and sportswear, for long periods of time.

Treatment of fungal infections is usually done by administering antifungal drugs or ointments. Some types of drugs that are usually given for fungal infections are:

  • Butoconazole.
  • Clotrimazole.
  • Miconazole.
  • Terconazole.
  • Fluconazole.
